Art Description 

This artwork was inspired by the powerful & loving matriarchs of my family. Especially my great-grandmothers. I’ve seen butterflies while out on the dingy flying on rough waters and been amazed by their strength, spirit and grit. My grandmothers were tough women, that were very determined and despite all the barriers and obstacles they had to go through in life they were fiercely loving women with generous spirits. They always opened their homes and hearts to people and it was always done graciously. My nanny and granny were incredibly selfless humans that didn’t dwell on self pity. They knew how to take care of their own needs whilst taking care of their communities. One of my fondest memories of my gran is walking into the kitchen and seeing her chopping up mayi with one hand behind her back - this was because she’d cut her thumb while cooking but that didn’t stop her. My grandmothers all had a remarkable way of making you feel special and loved any time you’d see them. This artwork is reflection of that love, strength, determination, kindness, compassion & generosity of my grandmothers. I am forever grateful that I am a descendant of these women.
